Checkin' out the Villes

Nashville, Crossville, Waynesville, Asheville, Knoxville. Southern America sure likes its Villes.

I'm living from day to day, and it's great. My path changes on each passing whim. After Asheville, Charleston was superseded by Knoxville. I'm spending a fair share of time in the Villes. The people are friendly and the hostels are great - quite dissimilar to the institutions one finds in big cities. Here, staying in a hostel is more like sharing the owner's house. I've met enough quirky characters to fill a cheap novella. The US never fails to furnish me with anecdotes.

My 2005 adventure was a triumphant trip, fuelled by adrenaline, naivete and a healthy curiosity. This autumn's ramblings are different. I still have the curiosity, but my stores of the other two commodities have dwindled. There's still something in those tanks, but less than I held before I blew my stock on foreign entanglements. I'm very tired. I spend much of my days wandering rather than eating up the tourist sights. The Villes are good for that. The slow solitude is refreshing for body and mind. I socialise when I want and slip away when I want; such freedom from pressures is the gift of confidence. I've enjoyed many a great night, but I fear not to eschew the beers on the porch.

I certainly couldn't travel forever, but the freedom is bliss. All people should know it, but few do, so I count myself fortunate.

P.S. The live music is wonderful down here.

P.P.S. A glut of used bookstores mean that I'm reading a lot. A lot.

  • This is indeed a proper blog! I really enjoyed reading about your travels, and I'm now curious about those anecdotes. Hope you continue to have a terrific time and looking forward to more updates. :)

  • What part of Florida will you be in--I am qute familiar with the state as I visit there every winter.
It looks like you have hit every hillbilly spot so far! ;-)

  • Hey all - thanks for the comments.

Hope you're good too Alexandra! Yes, I'm having a terrific time, and yes, I do have a bucket of anecdotes... even more than when I last posted.

Good to hear from you Etchen. Not going to Florida after all. This has been a trip of spontaneity. Stay longer, leave early, go here.. no - there instead! I am visiting Atlanta tomorrow - hope it's worth the hype!

I've had a few encounters with hillbillies. Not to mention wandering artists, mountain men, apocalyptic preachers, and most notably the Mob. It was about time...

Oh, and mosquitoes too. Lots of the pests. They've been assailing me for the past week - I have a full complement of itchy wheals.

But it is hot. So very hot. I'm basking in the mid-thirties... and the hot October sun.

  • Addendum: I'll be sick to leave a region that gives me so much female attention. They love me here even more than the Canadians do! :)
