Stan the Man.

I have nothing to say about the fetid Irish display away to San Marino; however, it offends my sense of sporting justice that the wastrels escaped with a last-second victory. If Steve Staunton's "performance" as De Gaffa (translation: manager) doesn't convince you that he should be shown the tradesman's exit, then perhaps this picture of Stan's extra-curricular high jinks will.

Not enough? Then let me point out that the side which frustrated Stan's Army contains one professional player and is ranked 194th in the world, below such luminaries as Macau, Vanuatu, the Turks and Caicos Islands, New Caledonia, the Netherlands Antilles, St. Lucia, the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Oh, and as a tart illustration, Tahiti ranks a full 21 places higher.

Remember: "San Marino are going to be a handful as the group goes on."

  • Intrigued by your Tahiti-topped litany of teams-better-than-San-Marino, I recently made an even more fascinating discovery concerning our previous humiliation in Nicosia. Prior to the Irish slaughter, Cyprus had only managed five goals in a match on just three occasions in their entire history. Taken from The Guardian: " becoming the fourth team to grant them that tally, Steve Staunton's shocking troops have followed in the illustrious footsteps of Andorra, Kuwait and a Greek Army XI."
