Kansas redefines science. Heh.

The Kansas school board has decided not only to teach 'intelligent design' in science classes, but to redefine science. For reference, the American Heritage Dictionary defines science as the following:

sci·ence (sī'əns)
n.
a. The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.
b. Such activities restricted to a class of natural phenomena.
c. Such activities applied to an object of inquiry or study.

Ah sure, we shouldn't be relying on dictionaries for our definitions anyway. Though I wasn't thinking of substituting a politicised committee of half-wits... (is there any other kind?!)

In the state of Kansas, science is no longer restricted to 'natural explanations'. One second. So what the hell is science concerned with? Everything? The zodiac? Scarecrows and tin men? Well, in Kansas... ;)

On a sidenote, there's an interesting piece in Wired on the National Academy of Sciences' response to this decision. It's more to do with intellectual property than 'intelligent design', but nevertheless, I think it's a good complement to this topic.
